Frequently Asked Questions

Understanding the Landscaping Profession

FAQs

  • What is “landscape architecture”?

Landscape architects shape the world around us through analysis, planning, design and management of the natural and built environment. Landscape architects draw on their knowledge of landscape aesthetics, environmental design, analytical and problem-solving skills, technical capabilities, as well as professional practice and management skills to create spaces that improve amenities, support the environment and the economy, and increase social health, safety and welfare.*

  • What is a landscaper, builder or landscape contractor and how are they different from a landscape architect?

They are the people or companies who install the landscape design.

  • Does Vorster Eliason provide building services?

No, but often we will help you find the right contractor for your project.

  • Why do I need a landscape plan?

Whether you are a commercial client or a DIY landscaper at home, a clear plan from Vorster-Eliason provides the opportunity to test out ideas and investigate your ideas, requirements and materials before you spend serious installation or “build” money. A plan gives you the reasons, and ultimately the roadmap, for your decisions.

  • What if I build without a plan?

There is a greater risk of duplicating efforts and potentially greater cost due to lack of organization.  Revising decisions can be costly. In government installations, plans are usually required by the municipality for anything except small residential projects.

  • What is the benefit of the OALA seal?

The seal can only be issued to architects with a combination of appropriate education and experience. Therefore, you know you are dealing with a professional and you can have confidence in the final product.

  • How do you capture my ideas and work them into your plans?

Through discussion and graphics we identify your wants and needs. We begin our work with general space planning sketches to progressively more detail to meet all requirements in an attractive and functional way. The final plan is professionally drafted and stamped.

  • Do you provide recommendations on plants and trees that will survive?

Plant materials are an important part of every project! They have many purposes: screening, windbreaks, shoreline management, visual delight and surprise. Plants are a key ingredient to support ecosystems. We also suggest maintenance programs to aid sustainability.

  • Do you provide project management for implementation of your plans?

    9. Yes, to whatever level you need.

  • Are you able to provide solutions for water issues?

    Only on the outside!

  • What are typical fees for your services?

All projects are priced individually, and a proposal is supplied detailing fees. Factors that affect fees are the scale and complexity of the project as well as timelines.  Residential work is usually between $2-$5,000. It is important to consider this up-front investment for your project in light of potential dollars saved in the build phase from working with a vision that ensures integrity in your decisions.
